This is one of the full coverage shades within the formula’s range, and it’s incredibly pigmented. It definitely yielded rich, full color coverage from the get-go. The finish is plush and glossy–it makes lips appear smoother and fuller as a result. It was lightly hydrating during the four and a half hours it wore for. The consistency is non-sticky (except towards the very end of wear, then it is very lightly tacky), medium in weight (almost gel-like), and all in all, a comfortable gloss to wear. I noticed a very slight sweet and minty flavor/scent to the formula.

This is a great formula for someone who likes their lipsticks more hydrating, somewhat glossy, but still long-wearing, comfortable, and vibrant. The consistency is lightweight, slightly slick, and gel-like but still intensely pigmented with full color coverage in a single pass. It has a lightly sweetened vanilla scent but no discernible taste. What I really like about this formula, especially this shade, is how lush and plump lips look–smoother and fuller–due to that high-shine finish. Neo-Noir wore well for six and a half hours and left a residual pinkish-red stain behind, and during and after wear, it was somewhat hydrating.

This is a new shade for the holidays, and it’s specially packaged in a shimmering, ruby red case. The case is plastic, but it had a lot of depth–it definitely caught my eye. If it had a little more heft, I could see it looking and feeling quite luxe. Showstopper is incredibly glossy; it seemed glossier than other shades in the range even. The color was richly pigmented and applied with opaque color coverage in a single stroke. The consistency was lightweight, emollient, and gel-like–it glides on like butter, as if the color was just melting onto the lips, but I didn’t experience any feathering or bleeding with this shade. It wore well for five and a half hours and left behind a residual reddish stain. The formula was nicely hydrating while worn.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Close-Up (302) Lightshow Luminizing Powder
Marc Jacobs Beauty Close-Up (302) Lightshow Luminizing Powder ($59.00 for 0.38 oz.) is described as a “multidimensional powder [that] flatters all skin tones by diffusing light and minimizing imperfections.” There are three colors within the palette, though you could certainly use them in any combination. Practically, it’s easier to use the highlighter on its own, and then using the two more contour-hued shades together, as an average-sized blush brush doesn’t fit well into a single stripe without getting a little of what was next to it as well. The palette comes with a gold overspray, which will last a use or less, so I brushed it off entirely before swatching or using the powder. I wore the lightest shade as more of a highlighter with the less shimmery, more brown-ish shades as a blush and contour, respectively, and the highlighter seemed to fade faster than the others–at around seven hours–while the other two lasted a bit longer but not for a full eight hours. The powder is quite generously-sized, though, at 0.38 oz., but the performance could be better across the board.
Close-Up #1 is a pale, shimmering white with a subtle, cool, almost gray-ish, undertone. It had fairly good color payoff, but the texture was a little powdery, and it may be chalky against deeper complexions. I applied this to the cheekbone (with the other shades below as more of a contour), and it was very reflective, almost metallic, and did somewhat emphasize pores. Urban Decay Naked (P, $29.00) is more sparkly but the two are similar. Kevyn Aucoin Candlelight (P, $44.00) is warmer. NARS Albatross (P, $29.00) has a stronger gold sheen/cast. Chanel Lumiere Sculptee de Chanel Highlighting Powder (LE, $72.00) is similar. See comparison swatches.
Close-Up #2 is a medium brown with soft, warm tan undertones and a satin finish. It had decent to good color payoff, and the texture was soft and finely-milled and not too powdery. This will be a better fit for lighter skin tones than mine as it really disappears on my medium complexion. Too Faced Spice (LE) is darker. NARS Laguna (P, $36.00) is darker. NARS Madly (P, $29.00) is rosier, darker. MAC Sun Dipped (LE, $30.00) is darker. See comparison swatches.
Close-Up #3 is a golden, medium brown with a pale, yellow gold sheen. It had so-so pigmentation, but the texture was on the more powdery side. It’s soft, blendable, and easy-to-apply, though. Too Faced Spice (LE) is darker. MAC Gold Go Lightly (LE, $28.00) is warmer. MAC Sun Dipped (LE, $30.00) is redder in tone. Illamasqua Disobey (P, $26.00) is more matte, warmer. See comparison swatches.
For your reference, I also included swatches of the two brown shades blended together as well as all three shades together! The similarities in color with the two brown shades made them look almost like the same color, depending on the lighting, and the sizing of each component doesn’t lend itself to really individualized use.
I wore the lightest shade as more of a highlighter with the less shimmery, more brown-ish shades as a blush and contour, respectively, and the highlighter seemed to fade faster than the others--at around seven hours--while the other two lasted a bit longer but not for a full eight hours. The powder is quite generously-sized, though, at 0.38 oz., but the performance could be better across the board.

Marc Jacobs Stagelight (302) Tonite Lights Glitter Dust
Marc Jacobs Tonite Lights Glitter Dust ($32.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a new and limited edition holiday product from the brand that’s supposed to give “lustrous, long-wearing metallic” eye color with a “weightless sparkle finish.” First and foremost, if you don’t love sparkle and all things glittery, these aren’t for you. Now, if you love sparkle and glitz, you may still like these, but they don’t escape the biggest problem with heavily glittered products: fall out. There’s a moderate amount of fall out; not the worst, but it’s not just a few stray sparkles–my husband and sister both commented on the “disco” happening underneath my eyes.
The consistency of the product feels like a powder and cream hybrid, as it almost feels wet, but then not quite. These are more delicate powders, as when I pressed against Stagelight, it actually dislodged large chunks–kind of like a melting glacier. They do feel smooth otherwise; almost emollient as they slide across the skin. I had noticeable creasing after five hours of wear, and it didn’t significantly worsen between and the eight-hour mark, which was surprising, but I wouldn’t consider these long-wearing given the creasing and fall out. The price point is a bit higher than I would expect (I would have expected $26 or at most, $28), and something I noticed was that Stagelight was only 0.06 oz., while the other two shades were 0.10 oz.
Blacklight (306) Tonite Lights Glitter Dust ($32.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “smoky black with an overlay of iridescent sparkle.” It’s a gray-black with silver sparkle. It had decent color payoff applied dry, and it was more opaque when applied with a damp brush–it was also smoother with that application method. Urban Decay Moonspoon (P, $20.00) is lighter. MAC Jet Couture (P, $21.00) is very similar. See comparison swatches.

The Lovemarc Lip Gel formula is supposed to be “color-saturated, long-wearing, gellified lipstick with a sleek shine finish.” Have We Met? is mostly opaque, but there’s a little translucency as you can see my lip freckle peeking through. I would expect if you had naturally redder lips, you’d also see that come through and darkening and reddening this color. The consistency is very emollient, definitely gel-like, and the color applies easily without tugging or dragging. This shade wears four hours on me, which is average for lipstick in general (on me) but short of what long-wearing formulas usually is (more like six hours). It doesn’t come as a big surprise, given the high amount of slip this shade had. It was very comfortable to wear, and it was nicely hydrating from start to finish. Marc Jacobs’ lipsticks are vanilla-scented but have no taste.

I have to admit: this was a complete challenge. In fact, it felt unfair trying to narrow down favorites to a mere ten when I was considering around 300 different shades from the past year. As what tends to happen when I start to feel indecisive, I went for favorites across brands and weighted uniqueness slightly more heavily than other factors. But there were some really outstanding formulas released this year! At year-end, I have to give major props to Cult Nails and OCC, both of which had a lot of contenders.
Color Club Beyond Nail Lacquer — a soft black with holographic shimmer (and all of the accompanying Color Club holographic shades were beyond fantastic, too)
Urban Decay Zodiac Nail Color — I fell head-over-heels for this smoky, forest green with flecks of sparkle and shimmer
Zoya Amy Nail Lacquer — a glowing–truly, it just felt like it was illuminated from within–reddish-orange with molten gold sparkle
What were your favorite polishes you tried this past year?
2013 was good year for lipsticks, particularly if you loved yours bold, bright, and/or matte. There were new formulas to fall in love with, and plenty of new and limited shades released from my favorite formulas. This was a tough list to compile! Because I really do believe variety is the spice of life, I tried to pick across a variety of formulas!
Maybelline Electric Fuchsia — a bright, bold blue-based fuchsia pink–this formula is incredible, and it’s only made sweeter by the affordable price point
Not everything released in the past year was impressive, and some products were downright disappointing! When I worked on compiling this list, I thought about cringe-worthy products; ones that I can’t wrap my head around at all. These are products that truly disappointed me with their performance and quality. Every single brand mentioned below has products I love but not every product can be a winner.
Estee Lauder Steel Pure Color Stay-on Shadow Paint — how Estee Lauder managed to bungle a cream eyeshadow formula when there are several cult favorites within the ELC family is beyond me–and Steel was so, so intriguing
MAC Pastelluxe Veluxe Pearlfusion Eyeshadow Palette — I have no idea how this made it past teesting at all, let alone why MAC made the entire formula permanent from the very beginning (why didn’t that happen with Megametals? Those were awesome!)
Sugarpill ElektroCute Neon Pigments — as much as I love Sugarpill, I was beyond excited for these and highly anticipated the release but was sorely disappointed with their performance
The Lovemarc Lip Gel formula is supposed to be a “color-saturated, long-wearing, gellified lipstick.” I’ve really enjoyed this formula–one of my new favorites–but I believe this is the first shade that’s fallen short of expectations. I noticed a slight tendency for the formula to bunch up when applied to lips, so it doesn’t look quite even, and the consistency had a little graininess to it. The color coverage was mostly opaque, and the texture of the lipstick was very slick and emollient, so it did feel like it was slipping around when I wore it. This is a more emollient formula in general, but this particular shade seemed extra wet. It wore for three hours on me, and it was hydrating during that time, but it settled into lip lines over those hours.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Pout (142) Lovemarc Matte Lip Gel
Marc Jacobs Beauty Lovemarc Matte Lip Gel ($30.00 for 0.13 oz.) is a new and limited edition formula for spring. It’s a “demi-matte” take on the permanent Lovemarc Lip Gel, but it’s still supposed to have the “gellified feel” of the original. I’m not a fan of the formula because of how it looks and wears over time. Initially, they apply so-so but tend to catch on any imperfections on the lips, and the lighter shades did not apply evenly. Worn, they settle into lip lines terribly and tend to leave color on the outer edges of the lips. The settling process happens after about an hour and a half of wear and steadily worsens. None of these were drying, though none were hydrating. The finish is more satin to natural, less semi-matte. They are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.

Because I’m a glutton for punishment, I bought this shade despite my lackluster experience with three of the other shades in the range. The problem isn’t applying it, not the color itself, or even the pigmentation; it’s the wear, and the way it wears away and leaves a ring of color along the outer edge of lips while settling into lip lines. I don’t have to do anything but sit at my desk, typing away, and it gravitates into every crevice on my lips. The texture is velvety and glides on without tugging or dragging, and it doesn’t feel like a matte lipstick at all. It’s a formula that will be less forgiving on drier lips, as it catches and emphasizes those types of imperfections. The finish is more semi-matte (Marc Jacobs Beauty says it is “demi-matte”), as there is still a sheen to the color for at least an hour into wear. It had mostly opaque color coverage, which was probably its best attribute. It wears five hours on me, but it wears quite unevenly over time. It was vanilla-scented but had no discernible taste.

Marc Jacobs Beauty The Siren (210) Style Eye-Con No.7 Eyeshadow Palette
Marc Jacobs Beauty The Siren (210) Style Eye-Con No.7 Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.24 oz.) contains seven eyeshadows that range from bright white to deep teal. It’s a new and limited edition palette for summer. The quality of the palette was very good, with only the blue being slightly powdery and a bit sheerer, but by no means was it even bad. Even though the palette is a rainbow of colors, they’re all noticeably muted–they’re not bright, neon, in-your-face colors, but rather a softer variation of a rainbow theme. For those who prefer more matte finishes, you’ll want to look elsewhere, as all seven shades are more frosted. All seven shades wore at least as long as eight hours with some lasting well after nine hours.
